DULUTH, MN (Northern News Now) – Duluth’s Planning Commission has tabled a public hearing on a proposed ‘Safe Bay’ at the Vineyard Church on West Arrowhead Road.
The tabling was the result of a legally mandated sign that notified the public about the hearing blowing down in the recent snow storm.
The Safe Bay, in the church parking lot, would serve as a place for people who don’t have housing, but have a car, to sleep and utilize some of the church’s services and amenities.
While the move has clear positives for those in need, the idea has sparked negative reactions, especially from neighbors.
Some have expressed concerns about drug use and the potential that some of those staying at the Safe Bay could trespass onto neighboring private property.
As of now, the Vineyard Church hopes to have the Safe Bay open until early October.
The public hearing on the proposal won’t be held until the May 13th Planning Commission meeting.
All public comments received by the Planning and Economic Development Department will be
included in the next Planning Commission meeting agenda packet.
