DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Wednesday is the 58th anniversary of the 1967 tragedy in Duluth when 3 teens were swept into the ship canal during a storm and drowned along with a Coast Guardsman who tried to save them.
An annual remembrance ceremony is held near the plaque that commemorates the Halverson brothers, 17 year old Eric and 16 year old twins Arthur and Nathan and 31 year old Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Edgar Culbertson.
Family, friends and Coast Guard personnel will gather at 11 a-m for the ceremony that includes placing roses near the commemorative plaque in Canal Park.
The annual event was begun by Captain Tom Mackay who passed away in 2021. He also led efforts to have a Coast Guard Cutter named after Culbertson.
The USCGC Edgar Culbertson was launched in 2020 and based in Galveston, Texas with the motto “Braving The Storm.”
