ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) says Adopt a Highway volunteers removed nearly 29 thousand bags of trash from state highways in 2024.
MnDOT says they work with over 1,680 volunteer groups statewide but have another thousand sections of highway still available for adoption.
Volunteers are asked to commit to the program for at least two years and are encouraged to pick up litter from the sides of their section of road at least two times a year. The average length of an adopted highway is about two miles.
MnDOT provides safety information, trash bags and safety vests to all the volunteers and maintenance crews then pick up the filled bags that are left along the side of the road.
Motorists are urged to move over and use caution when they see volunteer groups picking up trash and to stop throwing stuff out the windows of your vehicles.
