DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – St. Louis County and the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) have reached an agreement to dispose of area municipal solid waste at the County’s Regional Landfill in Virginia.
The ten year contract was approved by the St. Louis County Board on Tuesday and will take effect in July of 2026.
The WLSSD, also known as Resource Renew, currently uses the Moccasin Mike landfill in Superior which is set to close next year.
St. Louis County owns and operates the landfill in Virginia which has been in operation since 1993 and has seen recent upgrades and planned expansions that will extend its projected life.
The agreement still needs WLSSD Board of Directors approval which is expected at their meeting on May 19th.
