DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Strong winds and dry conditions have prompted the National Weather Service Office in Duluth to issue a Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather from noon to 9 p-m on Tuesday.
East winds gusting to 40 miles per hour and humidity of less than 15 percent means that fires that ignite could spread rapidly and become difficult to control.
The warning includes Koochiching, northern and central St. Louis, Lake, northern Cook and Itasca Counties.
There is also a gale warning up for Lake Superior and a Wind Advisory for the north and south shores and the Twin Ports area.
Meanwhile, the three wildfires in northeast Minnesota that began last week have burned over 30 thousand acres and destroyed more than 150 structures.
The largest of the three, the Jenkins Creek fire is just 6 percent contained, the Camp House fire is now 40 percent contained and the Munger Shaw fire is 95 percent contained.
The St. Louis County Board is holding a special meeting Tuesday to start the process of requesting state public disaster assistance for wildfire response and recovery activities.
