DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – At a forum Wednesday in Duluth, Mayor Roger Reinert, Police Chief Mike Ceynowa, other civic leaders and business owners discussed the topic of public safety in the downtown area.
Mayor Reinert says progress has been made to make the downtown a safe and welcoming place for residents, business owners and visitors, but more needs to be done.
The mayor says the city continues to confront issues that include vandalism, trash, graffiti, un-housed individuals and problem behaviors.
Over the past year the administration secured access to city-owned parking ramps, increased patrols in the skywalk system and removed some abandoned structures in the downtown.
Among the steps to be prioritized in 2025 to address the continuing problems are a stronger more visible public safety presence, a re-evaluation of the skywalk system and the development of “Good Neighbor” policies by downtown service providers.
The public forum was hosted by President Kristi Stokes of the Downtown Duluth organization.
