SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) – Superior Mayor Jim Paine delivered his annual State of the City address Thursday highlighting achievements during the past year and his goals for the future.
The mayor says business and tourism are growing, housing in the city is expanding and the quality of life is improving.
On the public safety front, Mayor Paine says they continue to tackle the drug abuse problem by adding outreach staff and diversion programs along with increasing enforcement and investigations. He says the work is starting to pay off with a 40 percent decrease in property theft, drug complaints are down by 10 percent and overdoses have fallen from a three year average of 23 to just five in the past year.
Infrastructure improvements include road rebuilds that feature landscaping and pedestrian paths that put people first. The city wide fiber broadband network to lower internet prices will begin next month in a pilot neighborhood with further expansion planned.
The City of Superior is planning for the upcoming closure of the Moccasin Mike Landfill and looking for a smooth transition while limiting trash collection fee increases.
The city is also preparing for the closure of the Blatnik Bridge which will stress traffic and impact business but Mayor Paine says the new bridge will be an opportunity to reshape the north end of the city in the coming years with more retail growth.
