HERMANTOWN, MN (KDAL) – Local religious leaders met at Representative Pete Stauber’s office last week, condemning his vote for the One Big Beautiful Bill and its projected cuts to programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid.
Area clergy working with the organization ISAIAH are urging Stauber to vote against the bill if it comes back to the House for a second vote.
ISAIAH is a multiracial, faith-based coalition organizing communities across Minnesota in pursuit of racial and economic justice.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill will add almost $4 trillion to the federal deficit, while also cutting almost $700 billion from Medicaid and $267 billion from SNAP.
Just over 9% of households in MN Congressional District 8 receive SNAP benefits. Almost 40% of those households participating in the program have a child, and more than 54% of participating households include an individual with a disability.
Approximately 23% of Minnesotans who live in District 8 receive healthcare assistance from Medicaid & the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
In a statement to Northern News Now, Stauber said the only people who will lose access to Medicaid benefits are “illegal immigrants and able-bodied adults with no children who refuse to work” and said he is proud to support the bill.
