DULUTH, MN (Northern News Now) – The Duluth City Council held a special meeting Thursday night to consider whether to affirm or deny a Planning Commission permit for a Safe Bay at the Vineyard Church parking lot.
Several days after it opened, neighbors in the area of the church filed an appeal of the commission’s decision.
After hearing from people on both sides of the issue, the council voted 6-0 to affirm the interim use permit issued by the commission.
The Safe Bay allows people who are homeless a safe place to park and sleep at night. The Safe Bay at the church was due to renovations already underway at the Damiano Center, which forced the Safe Bay located there to temporarily close and find a new home.
Those living near the Vineyard Church in the Kenwood neighborhood have been speaking out both for and against the Safe Bay since then.
Some opposed neighbors said they were worried about drug use and safety.
