UNDATED (KDAL) – Each year the Old Farmer’s Almanac and the competing Farmer’s Almanac map out their predictions for the upcoming winter season.
Although the forecasts are quite general, this year the two almanacs have two different outlooks for the 2025-26 winter in the upper midwest.
The Farmer’s Almanac calls for “very cold and snowy” conditions while the Old Farmer’s Almanac says it will be “mild and dry.”
Pick your favorite since the accuracy of either can be debated.
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac the predictions are made using a combination of factors including a study of sunspots, prevailing weather patterns and the atmosphere. They predict weather trends and events by comparing solar patterns and historical weather conditions with current solar activity.
The Farmer’s Almanac formula for long range forecasts include sunspot activity, tidal action of the moon, the position of the planets and the reversal of winds in the stratosphere over the equator.
We will have to wait for spring to find out which almanac came closest in their winter predictions.
Meanwhile the official Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service says the precipitation and temperature outlook for December, January and February in this region calls for equal chances of above or below normal for that period.
