DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – A stormwater bio-filtration basin in Duluth’s Irving Park neighborhood is nearly complete.
The basin is designed to intercept stormwater runoff from about 17 acres of streets and properties in the area.
An underground vault will then capture sediment and trash and filter the water before it runs into Keene Creek. City of Duluth Public Works and Utilities staff will periodically remove the buildup in the vault.
The basin filter includes native vegetation and sand mixed with biochar and iron filings to remove bacteria and other pollutants prior to discharging into the creek.
Additional work on the project will continue next spring when vegetation is established.
Funding for the project came from the Great Lakes Commission, the U-S Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Duluth Stormwater Utility Fund.
