ST> PAUL, MN (KDAL) – Hundreds of thousands of hunters will be heading to Minnesota forests and fields as the firearms deer season begins on Saturday.
The Minnesota DNR reminds hunters that safety is the key to a successful hunt. Precautions include brushing up on safe firearms handling, wearing sufficient blaze orange or pink clothing and knowing where your target is and what is beyond.
Hunting parties should make a plan on where everyone is hunting and check tree stands for equipment wear and tear.
In recent years, accidents involving tree stands is the leading cause of injury among hunters with firearms fatalities dropping significantly over the last 60 years.
Hunters in the Duluth, Brainerd and Grand Rapids areas are being asked to report any locations of bear dens in the region. Finding the dens would allow the DNR to collar more bears to improve animal movement data during future studies.
Deer hunting information can be found on the mndnr.gov website.
