DULUTH, MN (Northern News Now) – The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Duluth Police Department held a joint press conference on Wednesday afternoon to answer questions regarding the two shootings that occurred on Tuesday, providing significant updates.
According to the Duluth Police Chief, Mike Ceynowa, the homicide on Tuesday and the fatal deputy-involved shooting are believed to be related.
First, officers responded to reports of a shooting, finding a man dead from apparent gunshot wounds. His body was found around 4 p.m. on Tuesday near the intersection of 4th Ave West and Piedmont Ave.
The victim was identified as 33-year-old Darius Handy of Duluth.
At the press conference on Wednesday, Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa said Handy was shot by the suspect from a vehicle while at the intersection’s stop sign.
About five hours later, a St. Louis County Sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a vehicle for reckless driving on Grand Avenue near 59th Avenue West.
That vehicle sped off, but a second deputy helped stop the fleeing car near Grand Avenue and 59th Avenue West using a pit maneuver.
According to Saint Louis County Sheriff Gordon Ramsay, that’s when gunfire was exchanged between deputies and the man driving that car.
“After the car was spun out, gunfire was exchanged between the fleeing vehicle and deputies and ultimately the sole occupant, the driver of the vehicle that fled, died on scene,” said Ramsay.
The driver has not yet been officially identified.
