BAYFIELD, WI (KDAL) – If ice conditions remain stable, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore will open the ice caves near Meyers Beach on Monday.
The last time conditions allowed public access was in 2015.
To visit the ice caves, it requires a hike across the frozen surface of Lake Superior from the Meyers Beach trail head.
Since there is no parking at that location, visitors must use off-site parking lots and shuttles provided by Bay Area Rural Transit at ten dollars for a round trip. The National Park Service also reminds visitors not to park along Highway 13.
To recover costs associated with providing visitor services and managing the event, there is a five dollar per person fee to visit the ice caves.
More information can be found online at go.nps.gov/IceCaves or on their Facebook page.
