ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – As Minnesota state lawmakers open the 2026 legislative session, Democratic Governor Tim Walz and Republican leaders apparently agree that fraud reduction and prevention, prompted by the Feeding our Future scandal, should be among top priorities.
Walz says he’ll propose a “complete package” on fraud reduction and would sign legislation establishing an inspector general’s office — but adds “there’s a lot of other tools we need.”
Republicans say Walz and his administration were lax on monitoring and enforcement, even after federal prosecutors filed charges against dozens of defendants outside state government.
House Republicans marquee bill for 2026 would create an independent Office of Inspector General to “investigate and combat suspected fraud… in state government.”
Other proposed GOP legislation would require consequences for officials who allow fraud to occur unchecked, and create guidelines in state law for programs with a high risk of fraud.
