DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Earlier this year the Second Harvest Northland food bank received a million dollar grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).
The Prevention of Wasted Food and Food Rescue Grant was awarded to help construct a 13,600 square foot freezer and cooler at the new Second Harvest Northland facility on Commonwealth Avenue in Duluth.
That allows for an increased capacity to rescue surplus perishable food from area food wholesalers and retailers.
Second Harvest Northland serves 113 food shelves, on site meal programs and tribal organizations in a 15 county area of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.
Over the past year, Second Harvest has rescued more than 7.5 million pounds of surplus food. The new facility and freezer-cooler construction is part of a goal to increase its capacity for food rescue 310 percent by 2032.
