DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start to summer and this year will find more people traveling and recreating than ever before.
Triple A projects a record 45.1 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more from home this weekend.
To help make sure you get where you want to go safely, law enforcement reminds drivers to buckle up, put away distractions and don’t drink and drive. Extra troopers will be on the roads in both Minnesota and Wisconsin to enforce the laws.
The state Department of Natural Resources is also reminding anglers and boaters that drunk driving laws are the same on the water as they are on the roads. There also needs to be life jackets for everyone on board the boat.
Waterways in both states have been busier than ever and the DNR asks everyone to be considerate of the others using lakes and rivers this weekend and throughout the summer.
There has also been a big increase in people using ATV’s and UTV ‘s in both states and sadly, crashes involving those vehicles have also increased. Driving sober, wearing a helmet and reducing speeds will help to reduce the number of crashes and fatalities.
Enjoy all the summertime recreational opportunities available in the Northland but do it safely this Memorial Day weekend and all season long.
