SILVER CREEK TOWNSHIP, MN (KDAL) – Three people were injured, two seriously, when a van crashed into a construction zone on Highway 61 in the Lafayette Tunnel Wednesday afternoon.
The Minnesota State Patrol says the vehicle entered the construction zone in the tunnel, hitting multiple orange barrels and then crashed into a scissor lift that was extended to the roof of the tunnel and had two workers on it.
One of the workers was able to grab a light fixture and pull himself up as the lift was hit.
The driver of the van, a 34 year old Milwaukee man, and one of the workers were airlifted to a Duluth hospital with life threatening injuries. The other worker had non life threatening injuries.
Both of the workers are from Duluth.
