BARRON COUNTY, WI (KDAL) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating an attack by a black bear near the Barron County Town of Comstock on Saturday afternoon.
The victim, a 69 year old woman, was able to call 911 and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Her condition is not currently known.
Officers from the DNR and Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services located a bear cub in a tree but were unsuccessful in finding the bear involved in the attack.
Efforts to capture the bear continue with a goal of euthanizing the animal to assess its condition.
Incidents of black bears attacking humans are rare but do happen in Wisconsin and across the country. Black bears are generally not aggressive and tend to avoid humans unless cubs are present and they feel threatened.
It is unknown why this attack occurred and wardens continue to investigate to learn more details and a possible cause.
