SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) – To help clear invasive species and allow native trees and plants to thrive, a series of prescribed burns will be held on Wisconsin Point starting this fall.
The fires are being planned by representatives from the City of Superior, the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the National Estuarine Reserve and the Nature Conservancy.
Weather permitting, the first test burn will be near the Bird Sanctuary on the bay side of the point in the coming months. The site of the second burn, next year, is the red pine plantation at the end of the point off Parking Lot #5.
The burns will account for wind direction to minimize smoke impacts to surrounding neighborhoods and conditions will be monitored before and during the events to ensure safety.
Signs about the project are being posted on Wisconsin Point and a fact sheet is available online at www.superiorwi.gov/ishkode.
