ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The bear hunting season in Minnesota begins on September 1st and the Department of Natural Resources is again asking hunters to avoid shooting specially marked research bears.
There are 50 of these bears around the state that have large, colorful ear tags and are wearing radio collars.
Most of the marked bears are living in or near the Duluth area, the Chippewa National Forest, Camp Ripley and the Brainerd-Baxter region.
The collared bears provide researchers with data used in bear management such as location, physical condition, denning and reproduction.
The DNR realizes that hunters may not be able to see the radio collar or ear tag in certain situations.
If a collared bear is taken, hunters should contact the DNR Wildlife Research Office in Grand Rapids and coordinate the pick up or drop off of the collar and implanted heart monitor.
