ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Fire Marshal’s Division is beginning a statewide carbon monoxide awareness campaign.
To help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and deaths, 2500 C-O alarms have been distributed to eight state fire departments including Duluth and Virginia.
The fire departments will be installing the alarms in homes free of charge and educating residents about the dangers of carbon monoxide.
The threat of carbon monoxide poisoning grows as the weather gets colder and Minnesotans begin heating their homes.
Often called the “silent killer” C-O is an odorless, colorless gas created when fuels such as wood, coal, propane, natural gas and oil burn incompletely in furnaces, generators, engines, stoves, heaters and other appliances.
A person can be poisoned by just a small amount of carbon monoxide over a long period or by a large amount in a short period of time.
Since the gas gives no warning, the best way to detect its presence is a C-O alarm.
In Duluth, call 218-730-4401 to see if you qualify for one of a limited number of carbon monoxide detectors from the Duluth Fire Department.
