SUPERIOR, WI (Northern News Now) – As the federal government shutdown continues, a potential freeze on Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits would take effect on November 1st.
Superior Mayor Jim Paine has a plan that would help feed affected residents. The emergency plan would redirect $200,000 from the city’s economic development fund to a food assistance grant program.
He says it would allow the city to help fund entities that help feed the community, including nonprofits, food shelves, and even for-profit businesses addressing food stability needs.
According to Paine, Douglas County currently receives roughly $750,000 a month for SNAP benefits.
It would be a short-term program, designed to end when SNAP benefits return.
The proposal will go before the Superior City Council for approval next Tuesday.
The council would also have to approve each grant before it’s given out, meaning they would be approved in batches every two weeks.
