GRAND MARAIS, MN (Northern News Now) – A woman was rescued from Lake Superior last weekend after being swept off a pier in Grand Marais.
Chris Carlson was fishing in the Grand Marais harbor on Sunday when he saw a group of people walking along the pier out to the lighthouse. He says consistent southeast winds were pushing waves up and over the pier and yelled at the people to stop but they were unable to hear him.
According to the Cook County sheriff’s office, multiple calls reported a person being swept into Lake Superior around 4:49 p.m.
The woman was allegedly walking out to see the lighthouse with three others at the time.
When authorities arrived, the woman had been rescued safely from the lake by the people with her and Carlson who was fishing nearby.
Once rescued from the water, she was assisted back to safe ground by law enforcement and brought to the hospital.
Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen praised the heroic actions of the people nearby who saved the woman, avoiding a tragic situation.
Although Lake Superior is a tremendous sight when the winds are blowing strongly, the sheriff says the lake is not forgiving when you make a mistake. Large waves will knock you into the cold water, and strong currents can make it impossible to get to safety.
