DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The first ocean going vessel to call on the Twin Ports this season arrived Wednesday morning.
The Ocean7 Ranger passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge at 7:32 a-m.
The ship loaded in China and Korea and navigated the Pacific Ocean through the Panama Canal and the the Atlantic Ocean before entering the St. Lawrence Seaway system and the Great Lakes.
The Dutch built Ocean7 Ranger will unload a sizable shipment of project cargo at the Duluth Clure Public Marine Terminal.
The annual First Ship Contest, sponsored by the Duluth Seaway Port Authority and Visit Duluth, was won by Sheri Dauplaise of Cloquet who had the closest guess to the arrival date and time of the first “saltie.” She guessed April 8th at 7:15 a-m, just 17 minutes off the actual arrival time.
Last year’s first ocean going ship didn’t arrive until April 21st.
