MADISON, WI (KDAL) – The insect called the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been found for the first time in Washburn and Taylor Counties in Wisconsin.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), it leaves Burnett as the only county in the state without a detection of EAB.
The insect has a significant impact and leads to the mortality of ash trees in the state.
EAB has been spreading across Wisconsin since it was first discovered in 2008.
The invasive wood boring beetle attacks all species of ash trees is now found in most states east of the Mississippi and continues its spread westward.
The EAB migration to new areas is often due to the bugs hitching a ride in firewood.
The DNR strongly recommends that citizens burn firewood where it is purchased and not carry it to new locations.
